Glacier Express Train

Connecting St Moritz and Zermatt, this may be the world's most spectacular train ride.

For a whole day's worth of breathtaking alpine scenery, nothing beats the Glacier Express, the excursion train thast travels for 7-1/2 hours from Zermatt in southwestern Switzerland to St Moritz in the southeast (and vice-versa).

The Glacier Express makes one run in each direction daily in winter, twice daily in summer (when longer hours of daylight make it worthwhile to have a second train).

The train's route is an engineering marvel, with 91 viaducts, 291 bridges, and a 13-km (8-mile)-long tunnel drilled right through Furka Mountain.

The Glacier Express hauls sightseeing coaches and restaurant cars. Reservations are required.
